Princess Taz 5/21/01 - 9/22/09

I took Princess Taz up to her vet this morning expecting to be told she had a tooth-related problem. I first noticed a bit of drooling last Thursday when I came home from work. But she didn't act any differently when it was salad time. She streaked out of her crate rounded the corner and dove into her salad - just like she always does.

The vet didn't find anything wrong with her until she had her under anesthesia, which is when she found a hard mass on the base of the tongue. Dr. Kokes came to get me, describing what she had found. When I saw the size of it, I was stunned. How could Princess act so normally with such a thing interfering with her eating and, as of yesterday, with her breathing.

I told the vet to not wake her up, just let her go. She was enjoying her life so much and at best she had 2-3 weeks of going downhill before I would have no choice. Better to let her go in peace with no pain and no fear.

It is so hard to believe she's never coming home.

Je t' amie, ma petite. Merci pour tous les annees du joie.

In Defense of the Princess Taz

Princess has always been quick to bite.
As a responsible pet owner, I read every article I could find and gave her corrections. But I also looked for any sound, smell etc that could explain her action so I could eliminate it.

The last two bites I can understand - not appreciate, understand.
The new scar-in-the-making on my right leg is due to Princess' defending her territory (Rabbitland aka living room) against the intruder (shocking pink Crocs. Doc told me no more barefeet). Her second attempt to attack them resulted in a timeout in her taxi, as I was trying to clean her crate.
The bite on the heel of my hand was in defense of her territory (I was reaching in to change out her l. pan). I still had a white bandage on. Her teeth either bit through the wrapping or got under the edge. She immediately was put in her taxi while I finished w/her crate.
When she returned, I left the room to tend to the bite and I could hear her rattling her crate door at being "ignored".

Next time I have her in my arms, I am going to try to check her eyes w/a flashlight. I'll consult MediRabbit first so I'll know what I'm looking for - just to be sure her lunging isn't a result of altered vision.

Last night Princess and I had to leave home - fire alarm. After calling 911, I got Princess' taxi past the blaring thing right outside our door and into the stairwell. I made my way down two flights of stairs, slowly. I didn't want to drop her or trip.
Outside I was met with more humidity than we'd had earlier which was bad enough. Didn't see any smoke from either of our connecting buildings.

By the time I got to the door near the lobby, the siren was turned off so I went in and rested on the bench in the lobby. I saw a couple of guys going toward the connecting corridor to the other building and as soon as they opened the door, one of them said I can smell something for sure.

So I took us home via the elevator. Once there, I carefully let P.T. return to her house crate and gave her a willow branch as an apology.

The amount of discomfort resulting from this unscheduled activity had me wishing for something stronger than Tylenol.

So I called the pharmacist and was told it would be okay to increase from 2 to 3 Tylenol every 5hrs. He said the main thing to watch for is not to exceed 4000mg/day. He suggested Ibuprophen so I told him I was already taking 600mg 3xday per dr. instructions. He didn't see a problem w/the added tylenol.

So that, ice and rest is how today will be spent.

This morning I was glad to see rain - we need it so much.
It's a gentle rain, which shouldn't hinder recovery efforts at the bridge.

Bridge Collapse

We have several bridges here in the Twin Cities.
Yesterday, around 6 p.m. the 35W bridge that crosses over the Mississippi River in the downtown area collapsed.   Still doesn't seem real.
The bridge had only two of its eight lanes open due to construction, so that's a blessing.
Other bridges downriver have been closed and will be checked for debris impact and other safety issues.
This is the sort of situation that can bring out the best in people.   And there were numerous reports of people helping where they could.
I'm so glad I was able to reach my son to know he's safe.

There are seven confirmed dead and it sounds like tomorrow will be a recovery effort downriver.

Guess I'll try again to call it a night.

Princess told me to go get my own journal, so here it is.
It took hours to get to this point, and now it's the next day. If I'm going to do a proper shop for groceries later today, I'd best say: bye for now.
